What Is Whiteness?

Dr. Wan-Chuan Kao from Washington and Lee University has been working with the multimedia platform Throughlines to teach race and the concept of whiteness in premodern contexts.

Kao has created multiple resources for educators to use in their classroom, including the annotated syllabus Premodern whiteness and racialization: an introduction to Premodern Critical Race Studies that educators can utilize as a whole, or take individual units for their existing course.

His other contributions include an assignment on The visual literacy of race in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight that educators can implement in their own classrooms, and two videos discussing the appearance of whiteness in The Squire’s Tale and Piers Plowman.
